Linguistic Identity

India gave birth to the two most ancient languages: Sanskrit and Tamil. Together, these two languages have produced the greatest works of literature, science, and religion. It is tragic that we Indians have not been able to get for these languages the international status they deserve.

Sanskrit has suffered more. What we call Hindi today is the modern version of Sanskrit. A language changes with time. Most of the words either remain unchanged or change only slightly, and their roots can be easily recognised. There may be changes in grammar and in pronunciation. This happens with all languages but for that matter the changed version is not given a new name.

Take Tamil as an example. Someone who speaks, reads and writes Tamil as it is used today will not be able to read and understand Sangham literature or Kamba Ramayanam without help from a person who knows the ancient version of the language. In case of Sanskrit, unfortunately, a version of the language that was used by the common people got associated with the words Hindu Hindustan. For this reason, it came to be called Hindi. The result was two versions of the same language took two different paths and the differences became more prominent. This has resulted in damage to the growth of both languages. The genius of Sanskrit that should have been available to the modern writers was lost. This anomaly must be set right and the responsibility for this lies with those who know Sanskrit. First of all, they must get out of the complex that they know a language that others don't. They should accept in their fold all those who read, write and speak in the modern version of Sanskrit and mistakenly call it Hindi.

Let us form a group of Sanskrit-knowing persons who can communicate in this ancient language --- the language of our shastras. Those who are interested in joining my group should send an email to my ID dograashram@gmail.com with their details. I will send you a log-in ID and password. You can log in with this ID and password, and become a part of my discussion group.
